What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic dental service that can fix small chips, noticeable gaps, permanent discoloration, and several other common imperfections. To do so, high-quality dental materials, like porcelain, are made into small sheaths that are bonded to the front-facing surface of your tooth. The size, shape, and shade of each veneer are personalized to your smile goals, and since they are only about the width of a fingernail, they blend in seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
The Process of Getting Veneers
Usually, the process of getting veneers is spaced out over three appointments. The first is the consultation, which is when you’ll meet with Dr. Altenbach to discuss your smile goals. If he determines that veneers are the best option for you, then you both will solidify the details of your treatment plan.
At your second appointment, Dr. Altenbach will carefully remove a sliver of your enamel and take impressions for the dental lab. Then, he will bond temporary veneers in place so you can “test drive” your smile while your final ones are being made.
The final appointment is when Dr. Altenbach will remove the temporary veneers, secure your final ones in place, and make any little adjustments necessary to ensure you leave our office with the smile of your dreams!
The Benefits of Veneers

- The size, shape, and shade can be customized
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Patients are often surprised to hear that there isn’t a flat fee when it comes to veneers. That’s because we need to know more about your unique smile beforehand, including the number of teeth you want to fix and what dental flaws you want to address. No matter what the final number is, one of our friendly and knowledgeable team members will review all of the financial solutions available to you so the cost is as affordable as possible.
Veneer FAQs
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
Under veneers, your natural teeth remain intact but are slightly reshaped. A thin layer of enamel is usually removed to ensure the veneers fit properly. The teeth are still alive and functional but are protected by the veneer layer. However, they can still experience decay if not properly cared for, as the veneer only covers the front surface. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups are essential to maintain the health of the teeth underneath.
Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?
Yes, you can still drink coffee with veneers. However, coffee can stain veneers over time, especially if they're made of composite material rather than porcelain. To minimize staining, it's a good idea to rinse your mouth after drinking coffee and maintain regular dental cleanings. Porcelain veneers are more resistant to stains, but it's still wise to avoid excessive coffee to keep them looking bright.
If your veneers ever do become discolored, whitening won’t be effective for them; you’ll need to replace them completely. That means that it’s especially important for veneers patients to be conscious of how their teeth look.
Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?
Veneers can sometimes cause a temporary lisp, especially when they're first applied. This occurs because your tongue and mouth need to adjust to the slight changes in the shape and size of your teeth. The thickness or positioning of the veneers might slightly affect how your tongue moves during speech, leading to sounds like "s" or "th" being pronounced differently.
However, most people adapt within a few days to a few weeks. If the lisp persists, it might be worth checking with us to see if the veneers need adjustment to fit more comfortably.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
The number of veneers needed to fix your smile depends on the specific concerns you want to address. Commonly, veneers are applied to the upper front teeth, typically between 6 to 8, to create a uniform look when you smile. However, some people may need only 2 to 4 veneers if they are addressing specific teeth, while others might go for 10 to 12 if they want to cover a larger area of their smile, including the lower teeth.
We will assess factors like tooth shape, color, and alignment to recommend the ideal number for achieving your desired result.
