Do I Really Need Temporary Veneers?

A set of temporary veneers.

You’re well on your way to improving the appearance of your smile with the help of veneers! But before you can get your beautiful new look, you must wear a set of temporary veneers. While this may seem like an unnecessary step, it is actually quite important. Here’s why you’ll need to have them, and how to care for them while you do.

Why Do I Need Temporary Veneers?

Temporary veneers act as a placeholder for your permanent veneers, which could take several weeks to manufacture at the lab. During your initial appointment, your dentist will first need to remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth to make room for them. Once your teeth are prepped, impressions will be made so that your new veneers fit perfectly.

In the meantime, you will be given a set of temporary veneers to wear until the new ones are delivered. These will not only protect your teeth (which have been newly reduced), but they will also help you get used to the feeling of veneers and give you a better idea of what the permanent ones will look like.

How Do I Care for Temporary Veneers?

Properly caring for your temporary veneers is essential to protecting your teeth during this transition period. Be sure to brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. You will not be able to floss between the teeth that have temporary veneers because there are no gaps between them, but you should still floss your untreated teeth if possible.

Furthermore, be careful about what you eat. Don’t attempt to chew anything too hard, chewy, crunchy, or sticky, as this can cause them to detach.

You may experience some minor tooth sensitivity with temporary veneers; however, this should go away once you get your permanent set.

Adjusting to Permanent Veneers

Once your permanent veneers are ready, your dentist will schedule you to attach them. They will be fitted to your teeth and adjusted as necessary, and then cemented in place so they remain in place. With proper care, they can last up to 20 years, however you should be prepared to replace them, as once you have your enamel reduced, they are an absolute must for keeping your teeth safe for the rest of your life.

Remember, veneers are a beautiful solution to fix a variety of oral health flaws, from discoloration to mild chips or cracks and size adjustments, but in order for your new look to be a success, you must wear temporary veneers for a few weeks to keep your teeth safe and healthy until they’re ready for their makeover.
