New Year’s Eve is swiftly approaching, making it an ideal time to reflect on the many successes and challenges of the past twelve months. It’s also the perfect opportunity to set goals to improve for the coming year. Many people prioritize their health, whether they plan to start going to the gym every morning or simply want to drink more water. Don’t forget, though, that your dental well-being matters, too. Keep reading for 4 resolutions that can enhance your smile in 2024!
Resolution #1: Stop Smoking
Quitting smoking will benefit your body as well as your mouth. Whether you prefer cigarettes or flavored vape, it’s not good for you. Tobacco products contain nicotine which reduces blood oxygen levels and reduces flow. That means your body has a harder time delivering the nutrients necessary to keep your teeth and gums in prime condition. As a result, you’re much more likely to get cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer. Because there are other medical risks, like lung problems and other cancers, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor by leaving this bad habit behind.
Resolution #2: Avoid Alcohol
You probably already know that heavy alcohol use can damage your liver and other organs, but did you know it’s also bad for your teeth? It’s generally acidic which can erode your protective enamel and contains sugar which attracts harmful bacteria. As a result, tooth decay is much more likely to develop. Adding insult to injury, alcohol is also a diuretic and can dehydrate your body. A dry mouth is a hospitable environment to dangerous microbes which exacerbates the issue.
Resolution #3: Daily Dental Hygiene
If you don’t already have a consistent oral care regimen, now’s the time to start! You should brush and floss your teeth twice every day to prevent problems. It keeps your grin clear of plaque buildup, leftover bits of food, and toxic germs. Incorporating these steps into your routine makes it simple to maintain your dental hygiene.
Resolution #4: Ask for an Appointment
Many patients don’t realize that they should visit their dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning and examination. Doing so ensures that any areas of concern are caught in time to address them before they progress into something worse. If you haven’t scheduled one for the new year, call your dentist’s office and they’ll help you book your next appointment.
Now you know how to set yourself up for success in the new year with a happy, healthy smile!
